Papas, 37, has previously been linked with A-League coaching roles but more recently has worked in his home state with Green Gully and Oakleigh Cannons, guiding both clubs to the FFA Cup quarter-finals.

The former Newcastle Jets assistant coach holds an AFC Pro License and will work under Dutchman Eelco Schattorie.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to be able to join such a big club, in a league that is regarded within the top three in Asia,” Papas said.

“I am very grateful to the Green Gully board for allowing me to pursue this offer, it’s the only part of making this move which has been difficult as Green Gully are an outstanding club, filled with fantastic people across all levels, but I also know I would have regretted not accepting this challenge.”

Papas, whose contract runs until the end of the 2016-17 season in May, has previous experience in Asia in a variety of roles in India including coaching the Under-23 national team.

Dammam-based Al Ettifaq are currently eighth in the 14-team Saudi Arabian Pro League with seven rounds to play.
