Sergio Pellissier's early goal helped Chievo climb out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win - and plunge Parma right back into the survival dogfight.
The result means Claudio Ranieri's side are now only a point outside the relegation zone, while Chievo moved above their visitors on goal difference.
Parma went into the match on the back of a terrific run of three straight wins which had boosted their survival hopes, while Chievo had only taken five points from their previous six games.
However, it was the home side that started the game brighter and they got their rewards when Pellissier put them in front after only four minutes.
Following a quick break down the left which caught the Parma defence napping, Franco Semioli cut the ball back for Pellissier who produced a powerful finish.
Despite going behind so early, Parma produced a good response and had Zlatan Muslimovic's finishing been better they made have found themselves level just two minutes later.
After latching onto Daniele Dessena's flick, Muslimovic took the shot on outside the box, but his effort was comfortably saved by Lorenzo Squizzi.
Chievo began to take control of the game and Pellissier could have made it 2-0 after 19 minutes, but his effort from inside the box was straight at the veteran Parma goalkeeper Luca Bucci.
Much to the delight of the home crowd, Chievo were restricting Parma to long-range efforts with Dessena and Muslimovic firing well wide.
Three minutes before half-time, Pellissier came close to doubling the lead once again, but his header was well saved by Bucci.
Ranieri rang the changes at half-time with the ineffective Muslimovic being replaced by Andrea Gasbarroni and it seemed to have the desired effect as Parma showed renewed purpose after the restart.
In the 48th minute, on-loan Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi was found in space by Igor Budan's pass and his left-footed shot from the edge of the box whistled over the bar.
Four minutes later, Paolo Castellini's corner found Ferdinand Coly unmarked in the centre of the box, but he put the header wide when he should have done better.
Seemingly buoyed by the visitors' wastefulness in front of goal, Chievo began to control the game once more with Pellissier twice going close.
With nine minutes remaining, Chievo substitute Victor Obinna was set up well by former Parma midfielder Matteo Brighi, but his right-footed shot was saved by Bucci.
Bucci was having a solid game in the Parma goal, but only the width of the post prevented him gifting Chievo a second goal in the final minute.
From an innocuous free-kick, Bucci fumbled the ball only to see it bounce back off the inside of the post and back into his grateful arms.
That mistake didn't prove costly, but Chievo held on for the points to boost their survival hopes and leave Parma in a precarious position with three games remaining.
