River failed to overturn a 2-0 first leg defeat to National B side Belgrano in their promotion/relegation play-off, drawing the return 1-1 at their Monumental Stadium yesterday.

It meant the most successful side in Argentinian history - they have claimed 33 titles, the last of which came in the second half of the 2007-08 season - went down 3-1 on aggregate.

It started promisingly for River when they went ahead through Mariano Pavone after just six minutes, but they failed to build on it and Guillermo Farre equalised 17 minutes into the second half.

The home side had the chance to restore their advantage midway through the second half but Pavone saw a penalty superbly saved by visiting keeper Juan Olave.

The match was called off a minute before the scheduled end as fans started to vent their frustrations and the violence quickly spilled from the stands to the streets, with riot police struggling to cope with the scale of the trouble.

It ended with 89 people being injured, 39 of whom were police, and 50 arrests.

Passarella, who captained Argentina's 1978 World Cup-winning team, said: "We will resist (the critics). We will reformulate the club from now on."

The 3,000 Belgrano fans who had made the journey to Buenos Aires were kept inside the stadium for three hours after the final whistle as the battle continued outside.

River's players left shortly after under a heavy police escort.

Boca and Independiente are now the only sides never to have been relegated from Argentina's Primera Division.
