EXCLUSIVE: Roddy Vargas accepts he will have to play the waiting game after hailing Jade North's contribution to Super June.
The Melbourne Victory defender is loving life as a Socceroo as he continues on a football journey that just keeps getting better and better.
Having broken into Pim Verbeek's squad for the last round of World Cup qualifiers Vargas admits it's all hard to take in.
He told au.fourfourtwo.com: "I've been counting, it's about 15 months since I stopped so it's been a new experience but I'm enjoying every step of it.
"It's been pretty quick progress from state league, winning the grand final with Melbourne and now this."
Vargas' next challenge is to break into the starting eleven but knows that won't be easy.
He said: "We're all competing for spots but I'd be the first to say, in my opinion, that Jade North has been one of the top two or three guys in the squad during these games. He's played fantastic and Michael Beauchamp has done well too.
"I'm going to have to wait for my chance. I'm sort of accustomed to waiting for an opportunity though.
"I had to wait nearly 29 years to get a go at an A-League so I don't mind waiting for this. It's just massive to be involved and I'll wait my turn.
"The World Cup qualifying process is a long one and there are a lot of games.
"There will be occasions where players are unavailable or their clubs won't release them and you are going to need more than 11 or 14 players in a squad.
"You need 20 or so players to get a country to the world cup and hopefully I'll be part of that."
But after so long on the go, the next thing on the agenda for Vargas is a brief rest.
He said: "I had a holiday booked in Thailand booked before all this but had to put it off.
"I think I'll just have some time at home with the family now instead."
