Michael Johnson, brought up only a few miles from the club's Carrington training base, is expected to retain his place in the side for tonight's crucial Barclays Premiership match against Charlton.

The 19-year-old midfielder has taken the step up in his stride following some impressive displays for the reserves and had a hand in the victory at Newcastle last weekend.

Pearce said: "The fans love a local product and why not?

"I would rather give an opportunity to a young player to flourish rather than spend millions on a player - especially as I do not have millions.

"Michael has an inner strength which I like.

"He is a quiet man and a good professional.

"Michael is treading the boards like others before him.

"He is another one to come through the academy and he did well in the reserves to get his chance."

England Under-19 star Johnson is not short of self-belief as he prepares to make his home debut.

He said: "We've brought through 21 players from the academy and that gives you a lot of confidence.

"You can see the manager is not scared at putting youngsters into the first team.

"It is a big step up but that is all in your mind really.

"You have to get over the barrier of playing in front of a lot of people on a big stage.

"I am confident in my own ability and think I have taken my chance quite well."

With Fulham to follow on Monday, Pearce feels as though his side should be pushing for a UEFA Cup slot this season instead of worrying about relegation.

He said: "I am not particularly content at where we are sitting even if we pick up six points in the next two games.

"Being in the top half of the league and forcing a European place would make me content.

"But we have not managed to achieve that. Maybe there is a lesson there for next season.

"We should be in a higher position in the league. That is something we have to improve on."
