There was only one winner in the battle between Samantha Kerr and Kyah Simon, as Kerr’s Perth Glory ran out 4-1 victors over their title rivals.
It was a phenomenal round one clash, between two of the strongest teams in the W-League this season, and despite the late kick off at NIB Stadium the match certainly didn’t disappoint.
Matildas’ star Kerr followed in the footsteps of international teammate Katrina Gorry when she became the second player of the 2017/18 W-League season – after only two games – to score within the opening five minutes.
After bitterly and controversially missing out on the last three nominations for FIFA Women's Player of the Year, Kerr looked like she had a point to prove, and had no problem carving up a Melbourne City defence that looked a shadow of last season
Not to be entirely outdone, Simon nicked an equaliser for City in the 48th minute, but her side could do little to prevent a resurgent Glory running riot in the later stages, scoring three times through a Rachel Hill brace and a Nicola Bolger stunner to give Perth all three points.
It was a devestatingly clinical performance for a first round clash, and Perth Glory are now cementings as the pundit's favourite for the title.
