The Turkish-based custodian is the strong favourite to be handed the gloves against China at ANZ Stadium against China on Sunday after being on the bench for most of Super June.

Speaking this afternoon at the team hotel, he said: "As you know, Schwarzer's been there so many years and he's done a great job for the country.

"Everyone else just has to wait their time."

But China's visit provides a chance to help the coach decide who is best placed to eventually replace the Fulham man.

Petkovic said: "It's just lucky that Schwarzy's got a couple of yellow cards. I'm looking forward to it, if the coach gives me the nod. Hopefully he goes with me.

"I've had a few injuries in the last couple of years that's set me back so it's good to be back in the squad. I haven't felt this good for a while."

Defenders take time to get used to a new goalkeeper but Petkovic says he won't be afraid to bark out the orders against the Chinese.

He said: "It's important to speak to your defenders and and hopefully my voice can be heard to organise the defence on Sunday."

Petkovic hopes he will have a pretty quiet 90 minutes against the Chinese but he isn't taking that for granted.

He said: "China will be coming here wanting to win but so do we.

"We're expecting a big crowd there and we want to finish off on a good note and continue it on for the next stage."

And despite some grumbles about big-name players being released from the squad, Petkovic doesn't believe the Australian fans have cause for disappointment.

He said: "There's some great, talented players here and it's a good future for the Socceroos for the next couple of world cups.

"This is a chance to show the Australian public there are good signs ahead for the national team.

"We've a lot of players getting their first opportunity, they've a lot to prove and they'll be all fired up."
