Waikato teen Marco Rojas is on the brink of signing his first pro A-League contract with the Wellington side which is said to be interested in adding the Hamilton Wanderers striker to their roster.

The Waikato Times report that while no deal is yet to be signed for the rising star "...the process is well under way and an announcement could be made as early as the end of the week."

The scholarship worth $5000 is an annual initiative funded by Yellow Fever, Phoenix's official supporters group.

The scheme is now in its second year and provides a unique way for talented young players to get noticed by the country's only A-League club and for the fans to feel they are contributing to the future growth of the game.

"He did very, very well," Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said of the amateur Rojas after his training stint with the A-League outfit. "We're looking to do something by the end of the month."

And Pignata hinted that Rojas may not just be a squad player. "When you're part of the 23-man squad ... then you're part of it," he said.

Hamilton appears to be a hotspot of Kiwi talent with Rojas's strike partner Chris Wood inking a deal with West Bromwich Albion just last month.
