Ricki Herbert's men triumphed 1-0 at Skilled Park last week, shutting out former Phoenix man Smeltz and firmly cementing their role as Gold Coast's bogey side.

Smeltz was less than impressed with Wellington's set up and is giving them little chance of making finals progress if they put on the style of performance that they dished up last week.

In an interview  with the Gold Coast Bulletin,  Smeltz said: "Wellington didn't play well. If they think they are going to get to and win a grand final with a style of performance like that they are kidding themselves."

However, the striker's comments are not about to get anyone hot under the collar at Westpac Stadium and nor are they going to apologise for adopting strategies that bring about success.

"Yes, I saw those comments (from Smeltz)," Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata told au.fourfourtwo.com. "Look, Shane is entitled to his opinion. It was good to catch up with him at the weekend.

"We are just focused on ourselves to be honest. We've picked up two clean sheets in a row, worked very hard for them. We're heading into finals football and we're looking forward to it.

"When you get to finals, it is hard to play good football for 90 minutes, it be scrappy as well. But first thing is first. We want to end the regular season in a positive way against Central Coast Mariners."

Pignata confirmed that the club was hoping to get across the contract line with another two unnamed current players in the not too-distant future.

"We're delighted with the players already secured for the future. If we can get those done then I think we're looking at adding maybe three or four new faces in the off season," he added.
