The AFC has opened the door to the club's participation in the Asian Champions League from 2012 but with restrictions that could effectively cripple the club's ability to compete.

It seems that the AFC will demand the number of foreign (non-Australian) players in the Phoenix's squad should be the same as in other A-League squads.

As it stands, New Zealand players do not count as foreign players for Phoenix, meaning there is no limit to the number of Kiwis in the squad.

"The comments need more clarification," Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata (pictured) told the Dominion Post.

"We need the FFA to go back to them and just see exactly what they mean."

A-League boss Archie Fraser does not appear to think the AFC's move is a potential disaster for the club.

Fraser said: "We are encouraged by the indications from the AFC regarding Wellington Phoenix's eligibility for participation in the ACL.

"But there are some details that need clarification. We will be discussing those details with the AFC and are seeking the best outcome for Wellington Phoenix and the A-League."

Phoenix have been in limbo for many months over whether or not they would be allowed to participate in the ACL if they qualified through A-League success.
