EXCLUSIVE: Wellington Phoenix have signed 23-year-old former Perth Glory and North Queensland Fury wingback Jimmy Downey from Sparta Rotterdam.
The terms of the deal are unclear but it’s believed the Kiwi franchise will announce the signing of the one-time Fury star in the coming weeks.
Dubbed ‘The Gympie Flyer’ because of his pace, Downey made two appearances for the Dutch club and most recently he has been playing in the Victorian Premier League.
In other news, talented Futsalroo Tom Rogic, 18, has been called up for next week’s Olyroo/Young Socceroo training camp in Canberra.
Rogic recently won a one year full-time Nike Chance contract and is set to be based at the Nike Academy in England from this July.
Also called up for the camp is former North Queensland Fury defender Jack Hingert, who is currently playing in the VPL but is attracting attention from Europe and the A-League, say sources.
And Sydney FC are set to announce the signing of NYL player Nathan Sherlock to a senior contract.
