Australia ended their campaign with one loss, one draw and a win - the same as Guus Hiddink achieved with the Socceroos at the group stage in the 2006 World Cup.

But the 2010 campaign was derailed by the shocking goal difference after the Socceroos were humiliated by Germany in their opening match.

Australia were left with a mountain to climb in the final game against Serbia, requiring a flood of goals to proceed in the tournament and the task proved just too much for the Roos despite their best attempts.

After the game Verbeek conceded the heavy defeat against Germany had left the side struggling to qualify.

"The goal difference against Germany killed us," he said. "We have four points - I was hoping that was enough but it was not good enough.

"When it was 2-0, we were hoping for 3-0 but we did everything we could do. We played a great game although we gave a lot of chances away too.

We play all or nothing - play high balls, play for the rebound and then we were a little bit unlucky we couldn't score a third one."

He added: "There are no lessons - I'm just disappointed that we don't go on."

"It was a great result and a great performance but we are not in the final 16 and that is disappointing.

"We came to South Africa to get to the final 16 and it didn't work out that way. I don't think we can blame the players. They did a great job and have worked very hard.

"I think we are all disappointed because four points four years ago was enough. This time it isn't."

Goal hero Tim Cahill said he was proud of the performance of his team-mates.

The Everton midfielder said: "We are a great group of lads that really care about each other.

"We have just beaten Serbia 2-1 and it is a fantastic result."
