To see Socceroos return to training...

The result leaves the Socceroos bottom of Group D after two matches with just one point and still with a goal difference of negative four following the 4-0 mauling from Germany in their opening game with Ghana top of the group on four points and Germany and Serbia equal second on three points.

In the final round of matches on Wednesday, Australia must not only beat highly-rated Serbia to have any chance of making it to the last 16 but also hope for a favour from the Ghana-Germany match.

A Ghana victory in that match would mean Australia's goal difference would become irrelevant and it would only have to beat Serbia to progress but a Germany victory or even worse a draw would mean Australia would not only have to win but would have to score a mountain of goals to make up for their poor goal difference.

Verbeek admitted it was not an ideal situation for Australia to be in heading into its final game in which it will regain Tim Cahill from suspension but will be without Harry Kewell - after he was sent off for a deliberate handball against Ghana - as well as Craig Moore, who will also be suspended after picking up his second yellow card of the tournament.

"We really had to win this game to at least keep our destiny in our own hands," Verbeek said following the 1-1 draw with Ghana.

"Now it partly depends on the result of Germany against Ghana and it's clear if Ghana beats Germany and we beat Serbia we would be in the next round."

However Verbeek said he is not expecting that to happen with Germany heavily favoured to beat Ghana despite the three-time winners suffering a shock 1-0 loss to Serbia in their second match.

"And if Germany beats Ghana then we probably have to score four goals (against Serbia) so that is the way it is - that is the reality."

But at least Verbeek could take comfort from a much improved showing against Ghana following Australia's dismal effort to open the tournament against Germany.

"We did everything to win the game and we had some very good chances even with ten players," he said.

"It was another tough game but I think it was a fantastic performance from our players and we played for 70 minutes with ten players (yet still hung on for a draw)."

"I think the players reacted very well after the loss to Germany and they did a great job and now they have to do another great job in four days time against Serbia."
