PIM Verbeek has chanced his hand with an inexperienced A-League squad, featuring only six previously-capped players, for the Asian Cup qualifier match against Indonesia.
Verbeek had indicated he would only use locally-based players for his squad and has kept true to his word with all 21 players drawn from the A-League. Melbourne Victory has five representatives, Adelaide United four, Central Coast four, Queensland three Newcastle two and Perth and Sydney one each.
Of the 21, only Craig Moore, Archie Thompson, Tom Pondeljak, Danny Allsopp, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Matt McKay have played a senior Socceroos match before.
The biggest surprise is perhaps Queensland youngster Michael Zullo, while Matt Simon and Shannon Cole are the other rising stars in the squad. Adelaide pair Scott Jamieson, 20, and Paul Reid 29, have justified their decision to return from overseas in the off-season and are in line for their first Socceroos caps in Jakarta on Wednesday 28 January.
Archie Thompson gets another chance at international level and could line up with strike partner Allsopp, with the pair having the best record of any in the four-year history of the A-League. Dylan Macallister and Simon are the other strikers.
Tarek Elrich continues to emerge out of the shadow of his injured older brother Ahmad after winning Verbeek's nod along with Jets premiership team-mate Matt Thompson.
There are three goalkeepers selected with the competition for the No.1 jersey in Jakarta sure to be fierce between Melbourne's Michael Theoklitos, his former understudy Eugene Galekovic and young gun Danny Vukovic.
