SOCCEROOS coach Pim Verbeek has named his extended squad for next month's upcoming World Cup qualifiers - and included several surprise selections.
Former Newcastle Jets star Nicky Carle - now at Crystal Palace - finally gets a recall after recently joining Sydney FC training sessions to keep in shape just in case.
And first senior team call-ups have also gone out to Middlesbrough youngster Rhys Williams - who has been lured away from commiting to the Wales national team - and Dario Vidosic, who's enjoyed tremendous end of season form at German club, FC Nurnberg.
Williams, 20, recently publicly declared his desire to be selected for the Socceroos after previously representing the Welsh youth team on 10 occasions.
Williams was loaned out to English Championship Club Burnley by Middlesbrough for the past season and helped the Clarets to the Football League Championship play-offs, going on to win promotion to the Premier League next season - while Boro have been relegated.
After moving from the Queensland Roar to Nurnberg in 2007, Dario Vidosic has became a regular member of his club's first team squad this season. Having been used mostly as a substitute, Vidosic has made 11 appearances and scored three goals and is currently involved in the club's play-off matches against Energie Cottbus for promotion to the German Bundesliga.
There's a also a recall for Middlesbrough's Brad Jones to the Socceroos goalkeeping stocks, controversially replacing Olyroo shotstopper Adam Federici as Mark Schwarzer's potential back-up.
And former Sydney defender Mark Milligan is back training in the green and gold after he refound his form with Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.
But there's no call up for Newcastle United striker Mark Viduka whose entire football future is currently hanging in the balance, according to reports. He is said to be close to hanging up his boots entirely.
The Socceroos coach has given the veteran striker until the end of the week to decide his future.
Viduka, who has not played for Australia since the 2007 Asian Cup, had worked his way back to full fitness and played a handful of games for relegated Newcastle United.
Verbeek didn't select Viduka in the squad for the upcoming matches, but he has left a spot open for the 33-year-old, should he decide to make himself available for the matches.
Also failing to make the cut are any A-League players except Jason Culina, who has yet to pull on his boots for debutantes Gold Coast United. Both Matt and Archie Thompson have been left out of the current squad.
But Adrian Madaschi makes a return to the 30-player Socceroos squad after a three year absence.
Perth-born Madaschi made his senior international debut for the Socceroos in 2004 against New Zealand, at the OFC Nations Cup in Adelaide, which was part of the qualification process for the 2006 World Cup. His last match for the Socceroos was against Fiji at the same tournament.
Currently playing in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione in Italy with Portogruaro-Summaga, Madaschi was previously a team mate of Carl Valeri at Grosseto in 2005 following stints at Partick Thistle and Dundee United in Scotland. Madaschi was also member of the Qantas Olyroos team that represented Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
Also joining the squad will be Vidosic's Nurnberg sidekick Matthew Spiranovic and Norwegian-based Shane Steffanuto.
The Socceroos will assemble for a training camp in Dubai ahead of their match against Qatar in Doha on Saturday June 6, before returning to Australia to face Bahrain in Sydney on Wednesday, June 10, and then Japan in Melbourne on Wednesday, June 17.
Australia needs only one point from the three remaining qualifier matches to secure a place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
