SOCCEROOS coach Pim Verbeek hopes his squad of second stringers can get the win it needs overnight against Kuwait to qualify for next year's Asian Cup.
Australia are level on points with Kuwait at the top of Group B, three points clear of third-placed Oman, and a win in Kuwait City will ensure qualification with one game still to play.
The Socceroos will be without many first-team regulars due to the match falling outside of FIFA's international calendar, leaving just Craig Moore and Luke Wilkshire to lead the side.
While Verbeek is hopeful of securing the required three points tonight, he remains wary of a Kuwait side that boasts a good record against the Socceroos and won the most recent encounter between the two sides in Canberra last year.
"We only need one victory to qualify for the finals, but the game against Kuwait will be a very difficult game," he said.
"Kuwait are an organised and unpredictable side and they are a strong team as they showed in Canberra in the first game."
Kuwait coach Goran Tufegdzic knows a positive result against the Socceroos will be crucial for his side's qualifying aspirations too.
"The game against Australia will be decisive and crucial for us," said Serbian Tufegdzic. "We are now in the penultimate stage of the qualifiers and the situation is complicated in the group."
"All the teams have the chance to qualify and they are hoping to advance to the finals. We will fight for our chance to qualify, especially as we are now at the top of the group."
Both sides will be short of a quality midfielder with Gold Coast captain Jason Culina ruled out through injury and Walied Ali suspended for the match.
