SOCCEROOS coach Pim Verbeek has backed the professionalism of his players to put behind them the euphoria of qualifying for a World Cup and put on their best performance against Bahrain in Sydney on Wednesday night.

While admitting that injuries will mean he will not have a full-strength side available, Verbeek has said he will pick the strongest side possible for the match which he sees as much more important than a dead rubber
"One of the first things I will tell them, that we have to start concentrating on the game. They have to forget about tiredness, forget about trips and forget about World Cup," he said
"I'll pick the best available, I'm not doing any favours to players. We want to win the game tomorrow. It's not that I'll pick a guy because he's a nice guy,"
Verbeek said he learned the lesson from last year's meaningless final World Cup qualifier against China in Sydney, where he played a very young side and was roundly criticised that he had to choose players on merit.
"I'll pick the best available player," he said. "If he's 19 that's brilliant, if he's 31, that's also fine. The players want to win the game tomorrow.
"I don't give favours, I pick the best 11, if they don't do well, I have six players on the bench willing to prove themselves."
The Dutchman said that he will have another 12 months to trial other players in friendly matches, but that he wouldn't be experimenting either in this match or the following clash with Japan.
"We still have some friendly matches coming up, so maybe I'll use them then," said Verbeek. "Again, they can show themselves in their games in their clubs. This moment, I'll be playing my best available players."
He also vouched for the credentials of his back-up defenders, with one or possibly two of them getting a chance to press their case in the absence of Lucas Neill and the possibly of Chris Coyne.
He added: "Jade North has played more than enough games for us. That's the same with (Matthew) Spiranovic, that's the same with Mark Milligan.
"Those three players will pick up that spot instead of Lucas. And if Coyney is not ready to play, then we have three. They can do a job. Everyone can do a job that I've selected."
Verbeek's sights are set on topping Group A to round off an overwhelmingly successful World Cup qualifying campaign, while the ambition to end this stage of qualifying without conceding a goal was secondary.
"Of course if you ask Schwarzer, or any of the other guys, a good defence starts with a clean sheet," said Pim. "If it ends 5-4 then they are happy also, but they prefer 5-0.
"We like to win, we have to do that, it's a World Cup match. We want to be No.1 in the group."
