There was plenty of variety in the hour session which started with a gentle jog and ended with the drug testers swooping to grab some random victims.

Harry Kewell and Joel Griffiths were noticeable absentees with the Olyroo contingent only just having arrived back from the Intercontinental Cup in Malaysia.

Goalkeepers Adam Federici, Ante Covic and Michael Petkovic were all present with English-based duo David Carney and Mile Sterjovski also among the group. Nurnberg duo Matthew Spiranovic and Michael Beauchamp reported for duty as did experienced PSV midfielder Jason Culina.

Punctuality is clearly a Verbeek trait and a session that was scheduled to start at 10.15am began on the dot. "OK, let's start," barked Pim and the players were led on a couple of gentle laps round the Parramatta Stadium pitch.

The goalkeepers broke away to one goal to practise a number of drills while the rest of the players were organised into a pass and move exercise by Duut. Verbeek's assistant shouted encouragement throughout the outfield players' drill with a cry of 'what's that?' as the occasional pass went astray.

Spirits seemed high with plenty of laughter amid all the hard work.

At 10.50 sharp, Verbeek stood in the centre circle and shouted for the players to assemble for a shooting drill.

Federici impressed between the sticks with Spiranovic finding the top left hsnd corner of the net with a cracker.

"It's all about the first touch," roared Verbeek as a shot whistled high and wide of the goal.

The session ended with another jog across the pitch and then one or two further jokes as the drug testers appeared.

Then it was a case of sitting in the stands and gulping down a sports drink or two and escaping the sun.
