BARCELONA defender Gerard Pique has urged his team-mates not to let their standards slip in the wake of their record-breaking 2009.
The Catalan giants completed a clean sweep of all six trophies they could have lifted this year after winning the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi yesterday with a 2-1 victory over Estudiantes.
Lionel Messi struck the winner in extra-time as Barca added the world title to their previous successes in the Primera Division, Champions League, Copa del Rey, European Super Cup and Spanish Super Cup.
It has been a record-breaking year for Barca and one that has established Pep Guardiola's side as arguably the greatest team ever, but far from resting on his laurels, Pique believes his side need to continue moving forward.
"It's clear that we're the team who have had the best year in history, but if we are great, we have to continue winning," said the Spain international.
Coach Guardiola echoed those thoughts, saying: "We have to carry on working. We have a very nice squad and can continue competing. What will keep us among the elite is hard work, because the talent is already there.
"But now we can afford to simply enjoy this over the holidays, we have won a Grand Slam this year. After that, we just have to carry on."
Whereas the likes of Pique and Guardiola have been around for all of Barca's success this year, striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has only joined the party recently.
Nevertheless, the Swedish hitman admits he is having fun re-writing the record books after picking up his third winner's medal in just four months since his big-money move from Inter Milan this summer.
"It's fantastic. It's enjoyable to make history, although I've only been at Barcelona for a little time," he said,
"Barca have won everything, I hope we continue like that and we continue playing how we have been playing.
"One of the reasons why I came to Barca was to win titles."
