Villarreal winger Robert Pires has likened the current Spain side to the France team that conquered the world a decade ago.
Pires was a member of the French squad that won both the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championships and he sees a lot of similarities with that group and the Spanish team that are sweeping all before them at present.
Spain stretched their unbeaten run to 29 matches last night with a 2-0 friendly win over England and they are looking good value to add next year's World Cup crown to the Euro 2008 title they won last summer - certainly in Pires' eyes.
The 35-year-old Frenchman said: "I'm reminded of France, not only in '98 but also in 2000, when we won the European Championships.
"Spain have a lot of quality, but they are also a very strong team physically and they showed that against England, who are also a good team.
"For that I think that Spain could, without problems, win the World Cup."
