Diego, who joined the Turin giants in the summer from Werder Bremen, struck twice in Juve's 3-1 win over Roma on Sunday which handed the Bianconeri their second win in as many games.

"It's a great coup," said Juve great Platini to Gazzetta dello Sport when asked about the Brazilian Diego.

"I don't know him very well, but he belongs to the category of number 10s, that is of playmakers who are hungry for goals.

"He also shares Maradona's name.

"Juve have placed a lot of faith on him (Diego) and I would like to see him play with Alessandro Del Piero."

Del Piero has not featured in Juve's opening two league games with Juve coach Ciro Ferrara opting to play with Vincenzo Iaquinta alongside Amauri in attack.

While Juve are considered favourites to challenge Inter Milan for the scudetto, Platini believes that it is early days to know whether Ferrara's side can go all the way in the Champions League.

"Are Juve among the contenders? There is a long way to go," he said.

"I can only say that you don't win the Champions League by playing bad football.

"Juve have certainly started well."
