First-team coach David Platt refused to be drawn on Manchester City's chances of signing striker Edin Dzeko after watching his side spurn a series of chances in scraping a 1-0 win over Blackpool yesterday.
Adam Johnson's 33rd-minute goal was the difference as captain Carlos Tevez was guilty of missing a string of chances, including a penalty and an open goal.
City have been linked with a move for Wolfsburg's Dzeko, with talks reportedly under way, but Platt has no interest in addressing the rumours.
"You're asking the wrong man," Platt said. "What's going to happen in January is we'll sit in front of press conferences fielding questions, some of them near the mark and some way off.
"We've got a complement of players at this football club that can make us competitive for the rest of the season, but if the club believes there's a bit of business they can do that helps us, not only this season but in the seasons to come, if they can do it, they'll do it."
Victory over Blackpool made it nine points out of nine for City over the festive period, keeping them level with neighbours United at the top of the table, and Platt is delighted with the strength of the squad.
"At this football club, and at others as well, we're spoilt in that sense," he said. "We've got the luxury that the majority of the players that went on the pitch (yesterday) were fresh."
However, Platt revealed a number of players will be touch and go for the crucial visit to fellow title challengers Arsenal on Wednesday.
Mario Balotelli missed out yesterday, four days after his hat-trick against Aston Villa, with a knee problem, but could play after the swelling went down.
David Silva was substituted after hurting his knee and will be assessed in the coming days.
"We had a number of players on the pitch carrying knocks and we've got to nurse them a bit before we go to Arsenal," Platt said.
Despite yesterday's defeat, Blackpool begin 2011 in the top half of the table with 25 points and with games in hand on those around them, and boss Ian Holloway is delighted to be defying pre-season expectations.
"We've proved a few people wrong and we'll continue, hopefully, to do that," he said. "The worst team ever, we were going to be. Six points after Christmas, they said. But I don't read those papers any more, just look at the pictures."
Asked how many points he now wanted to see his team collect, Holloway said: "Ninety six, but I don't think that's going to happen.
"I just want to get as many as we can and I want to play like we did here and if that doesn't get us anywhere then, oh dear, I'm probably out of a job."
Holloway also came away from Eastlands deeply impressed with the ongoing revolution that Sheikh Mansour's money has brought, though he could only go so far in his praise.
Expressing admiration for everything from the club's facilities to the 'Man City vs Blackpool' branded rock given to his family in the hospitality suites, Holloway said: "There's a real quality to everything.
"I'm sure they'll be a quality club in the future if they aren't already, but all I'm concerned about is that they beat us.
"I'd like to say some nice things but I'm not very nice when I lose so, 'Bah humbug'."
