SYDNEY Coach John Kosmina wants his players to show some pride in the club's shirt when they take on LA Galaxy at the Pan Pacific Championship in Hawaii later today.
Kosmina was not happy with the first half performance in the 3-0 loss to Houston Dynamo and let the team know as much when he addressed them at half time with the score already 3-0.
An improved second half performance against Houston has him in no doubt a lift in intensity is all that is needed as they prepare to tackle the David Beckham-led LA Galaxy for the second time in three months.
“I just want to see the blokes play for the shirt and that’s what’s important,” Kosmina said.
“When you pull this (Sydney FC) badge on and you step across that white line it doesn’t matter if it’s a friendly or a pre season game or an end of season game like the situation that we are in now, you have to play for the shirt and you have to play to the best of your ability.
“It’s a policy we have adopted and that’s the way it’s going to be in the future.
“We want to take the second half of the game from last Wednesday night into the game against the Galaxy.
“We’ve played them before and from what I hear they are hell-bent on revenge and they want to get some pay back. Hopefully it will be an entertaining game.”
Sydney FC captain Tony Popovic also acknowledged Kosmina’s point and the need to finish the tournament and the 2007/08 season on a high against LA Galaxy.
“He (Kosmina) was disappointed with the first half (against Houston) and he let us know that at half time but in the second half he said he was proud of the boys with the commitment they showed, a bit of pride in the second half,” Popovic said.
“We took some positives from that and we really need to build on that (because) it’s going to be a difficult game and we are looking forward to finishing on a high.”
Sydney FC will take to the field with an unchanged line up but Robbie Middleby has recovered from his hamstring twinge and will take his place on the bench.
