The 27-year-old forward, who became the youngest ever European to reach such a tally for his country, marked the special occasion with a well-taken goal against Morten Olsen's men as the DFB Eleven finished top of Group B with a perfect record of three wins in three games.

Speaking to ARD immediately following the win, Podolski looked back on a memorable and historic night.

"The 100th game was something special, and the fact that I scored with my right foot makes it even better," he said.

However, Podolski says the truly important thing was not his goal or the record but his team's success.

"The most important thing was that we made it into the next round. It was a hard-fought match."

Before Sunday's match Podolski had scored only once in his previous 16 matches for Germany, having failed to find the net in his last eight appearances for Joachim Loew's side.
