The 23-year-old has been a regular for Germany, but still cannot find a regular place in the Bayern starting XI.

He has played the last two matches as Italy striker Luca Toni is out injured, but Hoeness feels he has not done enough to earn a prolonged spell in the team and has questioned his ability.

"He has had his chances and he has not taken them," he said.

"There are three players who perform well for us and the national team and one who doesn't.

"The national team is a different story. Eighty percent of their games are against really average opponents.

"If you score two goals against Liechtenstein then everybody thinks it's great, but our reserve team from the third division would not look any worse."

Hoeness added that he has "thought long and hard" about Podolski's current form and feels he has found the reason in Podolski's mind.

"The main problem is that he gets celebrated too much and he believes that everything is great," added Hoeness.

"When somebody scores a goal, they are given a knighthood the following day."

The Germany striker should be given another chance in the first team this weekend with Toni still receiving treatment in a bid to be back for next week's Champions League clash at his former club Fiorentina.

For all concerned, it would be better if Podolski scores against Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday.

"It would certainly be easier to find arguments for him if he would put one in the back of the net now and again," said coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
