Sydney FC skipper Teresa Polias says part of the playing group’s drive has come from the heartbreak of losing the Grand Final 4-1 to Melbourne City last season.
The Sky Blues make the trip to Perth for tomorrow night’s game against the Glory in the W-League Semi-Final.
Only three points separated first from fourth this season as the Sky Blues sat third on 22 points behind their upcoming opponents Glory and table topping Canberra United who shared 23 points.
Polias spoke of the drive, but believed they needed to focus on the Semi-Final first.
“Huge motivation. As soon as the final whistle went after last year’s Grand Final, we wanted to be in this situation again,” Polias said.
“We’ve got a huge job ahead of us on Saturday and we’re not even thinking about next week.”
“Any heartbreak we’ve had really, it’s driving us every year. Definitely from last year, as soon as that final whistle went we wanted to be back here again.”
Sydney lost their final two games of the season, a 5-2 smashing to Adelaide United last week and a 3-1 home loss to Newcastle Jets prior to that.
The Sky Blues fell 1-0 to Perth Glory away back in Round 6 with the only goal coming from Matildas star striker Sam Kerr.
Polias said Kerr was one to watch, but felt her team was more experienced compared to last year.
“They’re a really good team, Sam Kerr is definitely one to look out for as everyone knows,” she said.
“Any experience is a good one, for a lot of our young players they’ve got that under their belt now. People like Princess Ibini, she’s travelling this week. She won’t be as nervous this year. I can’t wait to see her get out there.”
Canberra United play Melbourne City in the nation’s capital on Sunday night in the other Semi-Final.
