Officers made three arrests for minor public order offences at Old Trafford for the clash against the Italian giants.

Extra police were on patrol to ensure there was no repeat of the ugly scenes two weeks ago when Man Utd fans clashed with Italian supporters of Roma.

Police were forced to separate hundreds of rival fans as Roma's Ultra hooligans clashed with local supporters.

It followed on from trouble at the first leg in Italy when local police were accused of being heavy-handed with away fans.

Bottles were thrown and police made 18 arrests during the fighting two weeks ago.

But tonight a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said both sets of fans were worthy of praise for their good behaviour.

Around 75,000 fans packed Old Trafford for tonight's match, including 2,800 away fans.

Police also made three arrests for ticket touting, but one of those was subsequently released.

Another man was also cautioned for a public order offence.
