Poland opened the tournament against Euro 2004 winners Greece and their fans were in good spirits ahead of the game.

Supporters were busy face-painting and chatting in and around the National Stadium in readiness for the first match.

Hopes were high for the national team, with prolific Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski hoping to fire them into the knock-out stages.

They certainly made the perfect start to proceedings, with Lewandowski heading them into the lead after 17 minutes.

But the home side squandered numerous opportunities to extend their advantage, and supporters were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw after Dimitris Salpingidis levelled for the Greeks six minutes into the second half.

However, it could have been much worse for the hosts, when Greece won a second-half penalty resulting in Wojciech Szczesny's sending-off, but substitute keeper Przemyslaw Tyton denies Giorgos Karagounis from the spot.
