New Perth Glory coach Tony Popovic says he will not rule out immediate success with his new A-League club.
Popovic takes charge of Glory after the club finished the previous season in eighth spot – its worst result in the A-League in five seasons.
Previous to that the Kenny Lowe era did produce some highs with the club making the FFA Cup final and being only one game away from making the A-League decider two seasons ago.
But with Perth desperate to lift silverware, the club also has a new CEO in former Sydney FC chief Tony Pignata and Popovic believes on the field the club also can achieve its goals.
“We certainly don’t discount success in year one,” he told FourFourTwo.
“But we need to build, we need time. We need to improve on and off the park and be a club and a group that is consistent in its work on a daily basis.
“If we can instil that there will be a lot more big games being played in Perth.”
The former Western Sydney Wanderers manager, also arrives at the club looking to resurrect his own career after his coaching stint with Turkish club Karabükspor ended after just nine games.
Popovic believes he can take the lessons from his time in Turkey into his new role at Perth.
“Every experience you learn,” Popovic said.
“It’s certainly one that don’t I regret doing. You learn you grow and I’m sure I’ll be able to show that in my next job.
“It’s very exciting being at a new club. It’s a club with so much potential, we can see the wheels are in motion.
“It’s big project, there is a lot of work to be done, we can see the people there are very positive with moving forward with Perth Glory.
“We want them to become a team that wins a on a regular basis, we are not there now but certainly that’s our goal.”
Glory fans will certainty hope that Popovic can emulate the success he had with Western Sydney when he led club to the Asian Champions League title, a Premiers Plate and three Grand Final appearances.
Heading into his first season with Perth, the 54-year-old does see parallels with Wanderers and the task he is facing at Glory.
“Maybe there are some similarities that not much is expected,” he said.
“The difference is we already have a number of players that we have already signed and things are already set which is different to the Wanderers.
“Now we feel we are already changing a bit of the perception around Perth Glory and hopefully we can show that on the pitch.
“Perth have never won anything during the years of the A-League but that is also the exciting part and also the challenge.”
