Dynamo Kiev claimed their first Champions League win in almost four years against an off-key Porto side on Tuesday night.

Oleksandr Aliev's wicked first-half free-kick was all that separated the sides at the Estadio do Dragao as Dynamo enjoyed their first three-point haul in the competition since defeating Roma 2-0 in November 2004.

The result also continues Dynamo's remarkable turnaround in European competition over the last 12 months.

After conceding a record-equalling 19 goals on their way to suffering six defeats in their 2007/08 campaign, the Ukrainians have conceded just one goal in three outings so far and are well in contention to make the last 16 for the first time in nine years.

Defeat for Porto is their second in a row following on from their 4-0 humbling at the hands of Group G leaders Arsenal last time out.

The victory moves Dynamo onto five points and into second place above Porto, who have three points from as many games.

The opening quarter-hour was a tight affair but the match sparked into life on 17 minutes with the first meaningful goalmouth action.

A flowing Porto attack resulted in Lucho Gonzalez being presented with a chance from the left side of the six-yard area but Dynamo goalkeeper Stanislav Bogush was alert enough to tip the ball onto the post going down to his left.

The visitors rocked Porto onto their heels with the opening goal after 27 minutes.

Lucho Gonzalez felled Badr El Kaddouri 30 yards from goal, and from the resulting free-kick Aliev hit a superb swerving shot that wrong-footed Nuno in the Porto goal and nestled in the back of the net.

The Portuguese side almost levelled after 31 minutes when Lisandro Lopez got around the back of the Dynamo defence only to flash his low shot across the face of Bogush's goal and out for a goal-kick.

The last chance of the half went the way of the hosts but Cristian Rodriguez could not direct his effort on target.

The hosts bossed the second period from the outset, and just a minute after the restart Cristian Sapunaru came close when he rose highest to meet a Dorvalino Lino free-kick but headed wide.

Two minutes later Sapunaru had another go from the edge of the area but Bogush made an easy save.

Porto carved out an excellent opening after 59 minutes as Givaldinho Hulk fired in a superb effort from long range but Bogush again got his angles right and made the stop.

Hulk also came close with a curling left-footed shot from 20 yards that flew just the wrong side of the post after 66 minutes, while Lopez was denied with a bending effort of his own five minutes later, the busy Bogush once again clinging on.

Porto twice squandered chances to level inside the final 10 minutes, first Hulk heading over the bar from a corner when he should at least have hit the target, while the final chance of the night saw Bruno Alves' free-kick clip the wall before bouncing up and into the grateful hands of Bogush.
