QUIM (Benfica, 13/11/75)

First-choice for Benfica, Quim has established himself as a regular member of the Portugal squad. Missed out on a place at the 2002 World Cup after failing a drugs test.

DANIEL FERNANDES (PAOK Salonika, 25/09/83)

Canada-born goalkeeper who plays in Greece for PAOK. Started out at Vancouver before securing a move to Porto. Two spells at Celta Vigo followed before he moved to PAOK.

DEFENDERS

RICARDO CARVALHO (Chelsea, 18/05/78)

Commanding central defender who moved to Chelsea after playing a key part in Porto's 2004 Champions League success. Has gathered huge experience of playing on the big stage and will be a key man for Portugal this summer.

PAULO FERREIRA (Chelsea, 18/01/79)

Pacey defender who will compete for the full-back slots with Bosingwa and Miguel. Predominantly right-sided, he may be employed on the left by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

PEPE (Real Madrid, 26/02/83)

Tall centre-back who has overcome a shaky start to thrive at Real Madrid. Joined the Spanish giants from Porto for a fee reported to be £20million. Born in Brazil, Pepe made his Portugal debut against Finland in November 2007.

MARCO CANEIRA (Valencia, 09/02/1979)

Versatile defender who can play across the back four. Left out of the squad for Euro 2004 on home soil, he will be eager to make an impression in Austria and Switzerland.

BRUNO ALVES (Porto, 27/11/81)

Strong central defender who has impressed for Porto domestically and in Europe. Played in seven of Portugal's qualifying games, scoring once.

BOSINGWA (Porto, 24/08/82)

Born in Congo, Bosingwa played for Boavista until Jose Mourinho spotted him and took him to Porto. Full-back who likes to get forward. Watch for his lung-bursting runs down the right.

FERNANDO MEIRA (Stuttgart, 05/06/78)

Central defender who has been at Stuttgart since 2002. Was left out of the 2002 World Cup but has enjoyed a regular place in the squad under Scolari.

JORGE RIBEIRO (Boavista, 09/11/81)

The younger brother of midfielder Maniche, Ribeiro made his Portugal debut in 2002 but has struggled to hold down a place in the squad. Predominantly a right-back, he can also play in the centre.

MIDFIELDERS

NANI (Manchester United, 17/11/86)

Tricky winger who has enjoyed a productive first season at Manchester United. Willing to come in off his wing and operate behind a central striker. Also possesses a powerful shot.

CRISTIANO RONALDO (Manchester United, 05/02/85)

Arguably the best player in the world, Ronaldo will get the chance to showcase his talents in Austria and Switzerland. Operates on the right for Manchester United, but may be pushed into a striking role by Scolari. Strong, pacey, skilful and good in the air, he is the complete package.

MIGUEL VELOSO (Sporting Lisbon, 11/05/86)

Defensive midfielder who will patrol the space in front of the back four. Reportedly a target for Europe's biggest clubs, Veloso should be a permanent fixture in the side for many years to come.

MANICHE (Atletico Madrid, 11/11/77)

Experienced midfielder who has enjoyed spells in Russia, England, Spain and Italy as well as Portugal. Spent the second half of the 2007-08 season on loan at Inter Milan.

RICARDO QUARESMA (Porto, 26/09/83)

Winger who possesses incredible trickery but can sometimes overplay. Will need to rein in his attacking instincts if Scolari opts to play him in a 4-4-2.

SIMAO SABROSA (Atletico Madrid, 31/10/79)

Another wide man in a squad packed with players who predominantly operate on the flanks. Has settled in well at Atletico Madrid after opting to try his luck in Spain again following a previous low-key spell at Barcelona.

MANUEL FERNANDES (Valencia, 05/02/86)

Young midfielder who spent the second half of the 2007-08 season on loan at Everton - his second temporary spell at Goodison Park. Joined Valencia last summer but failed to shine at the Mestalla.

PETIT (Benfica, 25/09/76)

Experienced holding midfielder who offers know-how to complement Portugal's array of young attacking talent. Has been anchoring the Benfica midfield since 2002.

STRIKERS

NUNO GOMES (Benfica, 05/07/76)

Willing striker who will be expected to lead the attack. Scored four goals at Euro 2000 but his tournament ended in disgrace when he was banned from international football for seven months for pushing the referee following the semi-final defeat by France.

HELDER POSTIGA (Porto, 02/08/82)

Striker who has yet to fulfil his potential. A fine spell at the start of his career led to a big-money move to Tottenham but he failed to shine at White Hart Lane. Remains on the books of Porto but has also had loan spells at St Etienne and Panathinaikos.

HUGO ALMEIDA (Werder Bremen, 23/05/84)

Tall striker who left Porto for Werder Bremen on a permanent basis in 2007 following a successful loan spell with the Bundesliga club. Strong in the air and surprisingly quick on the floor, should get a chance to impress in Austria and Switzerland.

ARIZA MAKUKULA (Benfica, 04/03/81)

Much-travelled striker who has played for nine clubs in Portugal, France and Spain. Joined Benfica for £2.75million in January 2008.
