Ange Postecoglou's Yokohama F Marinos earned a desperate first win of the season overnight against Andrew Nabbout's Urawa Red Diamonds, which now sit second-last.
Both Japanese clubs have had difficult starts to their seasons, Yokohama's loss last week to J-League high-flyers Sagan Tosu slumped Postecoglou's men towards the bottom, while Urawa are still searching for a win.
Yokohama move up to 12th after the 1-0 victory, Hugo Vieira scoring the winner in a tight encounter on the 81st minute. Milos Degenek played another 90 minutes for the J-League club, while Andrew Nabbout was left out of the Urawa squad.
One of the stronger sides in Asia, Urawa are reigning Asian Champions League winners and Club World Cup contenders, recently smashing Mitch Langerak's Nagoya Grampus 4-1 in the J-League Cup.
Two draws and two losses so far this season leaves them one place off the bottom. Yokohama, meanwhile, are already six points behind league-leaders Nagasaki.
