The Mariners currently sit 10th on the table after taking Championship contenders City to the very end at home.

The club currently has seven losses to its name this season.

The Mariners were on the verge of winning the game before a 90th minute Bruno Fornaroli penalty saved City any embarrassment of losing to the league minnows.

“It doesn’t matter how much they spend on their team or how much we spend on our team, we can easily match it with them,” Powell said.

“We ran over the top of them, so we can match it with these big clubs and it gives us confidence.

“We’re coming off a good performance on the weekend, I was very impressed by everyone, it was easily one of our best games we’ve played, just the intensity levels, our fitness levels are up there now so we’re competing with the best teams in the league.

“We know we can match it with these teams, again we played on Wednesday (losing 4-1 to Melbourne Victory away), it was a disappointing performance then.

“We really wanted to come out in front of the home crowd to put in a much better performance and I feel like we did that and were just unlucky to get that win.”

The Mariners look to do the impossible as undefeated Sydney FC travel to Gosford on Sunday to continue its unbelievable run.

Powell, who is a former Sky Blue, stressed the mental belief the playing group received after drawing to City last week.

“We’re looking forward to the game, we feel like we can match it with them and we want to be the first team to knock them off,” he said.

“It’s one game, but it’ll be a very important game, first team to knock them off and it’ll give us more confidence to continue on the season and hopefully can get into a nice form patch and work our way up the ladder.”
