The harbour city club posted their first three point result with last weekend's must win match against Queensland Roar.

New signing Patrick came off the bench to get the winner as Roar's home run hoodoo struck again, lifting Sydney off the bottom of the ladder.

The win silenced calls for Culina's sacking but Branko knows he can't rest on his laurels after the victory.

"The pressure's always on, week in, week out," he said today. "The win was a step in the right direction but it wasn't just the result, it was the manner in which we went about it."

With speculation mounting on the club's future, Culina said the squad used the widespread coverage to spur them on to victory.

"The players wanted to prove a point or two for themselves," he said. "The media made my job much easier.

"The players came to me and said, 'Boss, don't worry about it - this is nothing compared to seasons one and two.'

"I didn't have to motivate the players. They were ready for it."

Culina admitted he has still to decide on what exactly his best XI is after his side has suffered a series of call-ups and injuries so far this season.

But he said: "So long as we are scoring goals, it doesn't really matter who's scoring them.

"We have had numerous chances across the board but as I've said before, the league lacks a goalscorer who's going to set the game alight.

"But if you create enough chances, you will score goals."

He confirmed the club are looking for a major new signing but said he could come from anywhere in the world and not just the UK, as reportedly said by club CEO George Perry,

"I'm the coach. I'm going to take the decision on who we get," he vowed. "The club is looking all over the place.

"We are looking everywhere, whether it's Europe, South America or Asia, but it must be the right person who can fit into the side."

Culina was delighted by the impact Patrick had on the game at the weekend, scoring with his first touch after coming on.

Now he hopes it will be the first of many for the young Brazilian, but he's not about to be dropped in as the club's frontline striker.

"There's no doubt the goal he scored would have given him confidence," he said. "He's coming to terms with Australian football and he needs to adjust.

"It's not easy coming from Brazil, not having played for three or four months but he just needs a little bit more time.

"He'll probably be better teaming up with Juninho - but I think everyone will be better with Juninho on the park.

"He has a great respect for Juninho though so I'm sure playing alongside him will lift him."

After the furore over his pre-match comments on Wellington Phoenix - which were said to have fired the Kiwis to victory - Culina refused to be drawn on his opinion of Newcastle Jets ahead of this weekend's game.

"I'm only talking about Sydney now," he joked. "I'm going for three points - that's it."
