Iraq pulled off one of football's greatest shocks when the war-torn country claimed a memorable victory at the 2007 AFC Asian Cup and Wolfgang Sidka's side will begin their bid to stage a successful title defence against fierce rivals Iran at Al Rayyan Stadium tomorrow.
Though the conflict in the country was at its peak, Iraq made headlines across the world to claim continental glory for the first time in their history with a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in Jakarta.
Much has changed both on and off the pitch for Iraq since then, and few expect them to mount a serious challenge for the trophy once again in Doha.
But, as the events of three-and-a-half years ago proved, anything can happen in football and the fact their opening Group D game is against regional rivals Iran certainly provides added spice.
"It was a huge success in 2007 because Iraq were not the favourites, so it was a big surprise," said Sidka.
"All my staff told me about the huge success but this is a new championship and we start from zero again.
"As title-holders we have confidence but there are other teams who are able to win the tournament."
While Sidka refused to be drawn on his expectations for the tournament, Iran boss Afshin Ghotbi was much more forthcoming.
Team Melli are three-time Asian Cup winners and though the last of those victories came in 1976, Ghotbi is nevertheless confident they have the strength to go all the way this year.
"We have the quality to win this tournament," he said.
"There are some events we cannot control so we have to leave that a little bit to the higher power and I hope we have that bit of luck that is necessary to become the champions."
Despite his confidence, Ghotbi was all too aware that the opening games of tournaments are by their very nature unpredictable and insisted he would not be concerning himself too much with the result of the match.
"There are nine points to fight for (in the group)," he added. "If we lose the match we don't lose hope of progressing to the next round.
"Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's match we will go on because our target is not only to win the opening match; it is to go to the second round."
