A RADICAL plan for elite junior development kicked off on the weekend in Sydney with more than 1200 youngsters taking part in trials for the so-called Project 22.
The project offers a year-long (10-month) program for NSW's most talented players from ages 11 to 14 to train together and compete against each other.
These 'best of the best' will be scouted at trials, taken from their clubs and brought together into crack regional units training four nights a week for 40 weeks a year.
Based on the National Curriculum launched by the FFA, Project 22 is centred on Football NSW being able to exceed world best practice in providing an elite competition and training environment for future national team players.
The program is also free - a rarity in the current user-pays system.
Football NSW says 1200 children (U/9U/12) from across the Sydney metropolitan area participated in the trials on the weekend.
FourFourTwo magazine has put the project under the microscope and will feature an extensive report on it in the November issue, out in early October.
Project 22 trials will continue this weekend with the following trials:
U13, U14 (DOB 1997-1996) [boys] 26 and 27 September, 2009
U13, U14, U15 (DOB 1997-1995) [girls] 26 and 27 September, 2009
