Italy's anti-doping prosecutor is demanding that Adrian Mutu receives a one-year ban after twice failing a drugs test earlier this year.
The Fiorentina forward tested positive for anti-obesity drug sibutramine after matches against Bari on January 10 and Lazio 10 days later.
The prosecutor has presented his case to the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) asking for the player to be sidelined for 12 months.
A statement from CONI read: "The anti-doping prosecutors' office has presented to CONI's anti-doping tribunal the case of Adrian Mutu, requesting a one year ban be applied, according to article 10.4 of WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) code."
The Romanian international admitted taking the substance but hopes to avoid a lengthy ban.
The former Chelsea star has been suspended from all competition as he awaits the outcome of the case, which will be decided by CONI's anti-doping court.
In 2004, Mutu was sacked by Chelsea after testing positive for cocaine, and was given a seven-month worldwide football suspension.
After being axed by the Premier League giants and serving his ban, Mutu joined Juventus in January 2005 before moving to Fiorentina at the end of the following season.
The 31-year-old is under contract with the Viola until June 2012 and has scored four goals in 11 league appearances this season.
