The Eredivisie champions - without a manager since Ronald Koeman left to join Valencia a fortnight ago - targeted former Tottenham boss Martin Jol but he rejected them because it would have affected his compensation package from Spurs, while Fred Rutten is not willing to leave FC Twente.

PSV director Jan Reker told Eindhovens Dagblad: "We have the case 100% under control. From the start we had several options. Some are hard to realise at the moment, others looked more easy.

"Jol was immediately available, but the compensation that he should get from Tottenham Hotspur was a big stumbling block. It was just too much money.

"Fred Rutten told me he found it impossible to leave Twente. I completely respect his decision."
