Beatrix is confined to a wheelchair so the visit of a global icon was something she’d been eagerly anticipating.

“I’ve been watching the movie ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ to prepare myself for his visit,” she told au.fourfourtwo.com.

Beckham signed an autograph for Beatrix in her book and spent time talking with her. His visit clearly made an impression on the little girl with the big smile.

“It was very exciting. Great," she said afterwards.

Beckham’s visit this morning had the hospital abuzz after his high profile touchdown in Melbourne on Sunday morning.

Another large media contingent was on hand with Channel 7 broadcasting live crosses.

A group of female fans were also waiting for the star at the hospital entrance while staff were lined up in the corridors just to get a glimpse of the Galaxy superstar.

Dr Peter Squire wore his England shirt this morning in honour of Beckam’s visit and even got it signed by the former Manchester United and Real Madrid hero.

Dr Squire told au.fourfourtwo.com that the treat was a morale-boost for staff as well as the kids during a busy time for the hospital.

“It’s fantastic. He’s such an inspiration to all the children and all the staff who work here,” he said.

“We’re furiously busy doing transplants all weekend and along comes Beckham to inspire us. It’s great.

“He should be back in the England team!”

Beckham and his LA Galaxy teammates play Melbourne Victory on Tuesday night at Etihad Stadium in what could be his final game in a Galaxy shirt.

Added Dr Squire: “He’s a man of great goodwill. He’s not a showpony like everyone else thinks he is, he has respect and humility. We love him.”
