WELLINGTON Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert is calling on his X-factor players to kick-start a faltering start to the season.
Still seeking their first victory of the Hyundai A-League season after four matches, Phoenix make the long trip to Western Australia to take on Perth Glory tomorrow afternoon.
Wellington were lucky to scrape through with a point last weekend in a 0-0 draw at home to Central Coast Mariners, meaning the club has yet to register a win in three attempts at Westpac Stadium this season.
Bottom-placed Glory have made an even worse start with one point from their four appearances and Herbert wants his big guns to take advantage.
The Phoenix boss is urging playmakers such as midfielders Leilei Gao, Daniel and Troy Hearfield along with strikers Shane Smeltz and Adam Kwasnik to fill their boots and take the game to Perth.
"I think we can release the shackles in the middle and front thirds of the pitch, shift the ball quicker, get a few more bodies forward and get the ball to people who can expose the opposition," Herbert said.
"Against the Mariners it was a case of playing tighter and I was pleased to see more commitment. Now we need to get those X-factor players on the ball and creating problems for the opposition.
"We can be more aggressive going forward."
Herbert insists the feeling in the Phoenix camp is confident despite an empty wins column and nothing less than three points in Perth will be good enough.
"We've set the stall out to win as many games as we can – if not all of them – and we'll be approaching this game no differently to how we approach every game," he said.
"The onus is on winning and that has been the intent we've taken into every game from day one."
They hardly threatened the Mariners' goal in last week's draw but Phoenix captain Andrew Durante said the defensive effort was one they took plenty of heart from.
"It was important for us to get that one under our belts, to prove to ourselves as much as anyone that we could hang tough, do the basics and get something out of the game," Durante said.
"As a group we drew a line in the sand and vowed that was the bare minimum we have to give every week.
"That performance has helped us look ahead to this weekend with a lot of confidence."
