EXCLUSIVE: Wellington Phoenix's faith in new striker Chris Greenacre is matched by one punter who has bet $200 on him finishing top of the A-League scoring charts.
Greenacre scored his first goal for the club in a 3-2 friendly defeat in China and is now preparing for his club's match against Central Coast Mariners in Dubbo this weekend.
His price to finish top of the charts has tumbled from $67 to $24 and a TAB spokesman confirmed the $200 bet was the biggest individual punt so far - albeit with the season yet to get underway.
Archie Thompson remains the favourite for the golden boot at $7, Shane Smeltz is $8 with both Danny Allsopp and John Aloisi at $9. Clubs are not allowed to bet but Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata has observed the prices being put on Wellington's predicted fortunes for the new season.
All the leading bookmakers give Phoenix little chance of success this year with the only 'prize' they are favourites for being the wooden spoon.
The CEO also raised an eyebrow at the price of $67 for Greenacre.
Pignata told au.fourfourtwo.com: "It doesn't surprise me (the prices) to be honest. Every year it is the same thing and no doubt the pundits in Australia won't be talking us up either.
"We're not worried about that at all. We believe we have strengthened our squad with the players we've brought in. We're confident we can be there or thereabouts."
With tongue firmly in cheek, Pignata joked that Phoenix were one of nine clubs jostling for the runners-up spot in the competition. "Apparently we're all going for second behind Gold Coast," he laughed.
