In a statement, PwC announced that they had been engaged by the Macarthur bid team, and that their Sydney City Pulse report concluded that the area "needs more investment in terms of elite sports teams and sporting facilities."

"In considering new teams for the A-League, one natural place for expansion of the football footprint would be in Sydney's South West, Macarthur region," said PwC Cities Leader and Sydney Managing Partner Joseph Carozzi.

"It is home to a young and vibrant community that has an expected population growth of around one million."

The firm's Cities Partner Kylee Anastasi added, "With the new airport the key piece of infrastructure that will strengthen the region and attract more people, a focus on ensuring there are good 'play' aspects for these communities can ensure we build thriving precincts for locals and visitors to experience and enjoy."

The bid has been a hot topic this week. Sydney FC threw their support behind the billionaire-backed proposal, with club chairman Scott Barlow declaring Macarthur "the future of Sydney."

However, the team behind the rival Southern Expansion bid hit back, with chairman Chris Gardiner accusing Barlow of "protectionism and monopoly" and insisting an "immediately successful" southern A-League club would be best for the competition.

Football Federation Australia will name two expansion teams for 2019/20 in October.
