Only eleven goals were scored in the five QSL games in Round 7. Redlands City Devils’ 5-0 win over Whitsunday Miners was the most emphatic scoreline of Round 7, with all other games seeing tightly fought out slim wins – all of which were won by a one goal difference.
Despite the lowest amount of goals scored in a round so far this season, none of the games disappointed.
Russell Woodruffe’s sixth goal of the season gave Brisbane Strikers three points against NQ Razorbacks in Townsville. The home side had plenty of chances and even came close to stealing a draw but the win was confirmed when Sean Burke received his marching orders for a second yellow card in the dying stages of the game.
Whitsunday Miners travelled south to Cleveland Showgrounds to play Redlands City Devils in high spirits following their 4-0 home win last time out. Bu the men from Mackay suffered against the second placed team in the league and couldn’t hit the back of the net. Andy Barton, Josh Filewood, Barry Moran, Ryan Bridges and Yoshi Okada were all on the scoresheet for the Devils’.
Queensland Academy of Sport won only their second game of the season, scoring two goals in the first half to beat the Bundaberg Spirit 2-1. A right-footed volley from Matt Thurtell and a coolly-taken penalty by Daniel Bowles ensured that Laurie Stephenson’s goals was simply a consolation. The loss leaves Spirit bottom of the table.
Capricorn Cougars recorded their first win of the campaign with a 1-0 victory over struggling Logan United. The visitors dominated the opening proceedings and the elusive goal finally came for the Cougars when Danny Cox pounced on a loose ball following Vanuatu International goalkeeper Chikau Mansale’s save. United have now failed to score in three games.
In the final game of the round, Sunshine Coast Fire extended their unbeaten run this season by beating Olympic FC 1-0. Tyson Holmes again proved to be the difference, scoring his third goal in two games just after the break. Despite creating chances and sharing equal possession, Olympic failed to convert the chances they created, something they will be aiming to fix next time out.
