Gomes should have cleared Benoit Assou-Ekotto's back-pass but instead the goalkeeper was caught in possession and brought down Fabio Quagliarella, with Antonio Di Natale scoring from the penalty spot.

Udinese, flying high in second place in Serie A, should have added to their lead at Stadio Friuli but only sealed their 2-0 win late on when Simone Pepe finished off a flowing move.

Ramos, who has overseen Tottenham's worst start to a season in their history, said: "I'm very angry because I don't like to lose. We lost this match in this competition and now we have to win matches to qualify for the next stage."

Ledley King played in the Group D clash so will probably miss Sunday's clash against Bolton when bottom-of-the-table Spurs look to gain ground on the rest of the Barclays Premier League.

Adding to Ramos' worries was Jonathan Woodgate getting taken off in the second half with an apparent knock. Assou-Ekotto was hauled off before that after a wretched return to the starting XI.

Ramos had dropped £15million summer-signing David Bentley from his squad - less than 24 hours after the midfielder's outspoken remarks on Spurs' start to the season emerged.

"I chose these 18 out of the 20 in the squad," Ramos said. "I don't know what happened before the match.

"His reaction was normal, the same as the other players who are not playing."

Even without their winger, Tottenham were matching Udinese until Gomes' error, which was harsh as his saves against Wisla Krakow earned a place in the group stages.

Ramos admitted it was the turning point of the game - but refused to blame his goalkeeper.

"In the first half we played okay but our goalkeeper made a mistake that turned the game totally in the wrong direction for us," Ramos said. "If there was no mistake from Gomes, if we scored the first goal, things would have been different.

"Of course this type of mistake can always happen, this is part of football. I still have to support my players and defend them."

O'Hara was dismissed for two mistimed tackles in the same minute, both against Alexis Sanchez.

Ramos now has to lift his players for Bolton after the dressing room was left deflated by another defeat.

"The situation is not very comfortable," he said. "At this moment (morale) in the dressing room is not in a normal situation but they know it's possible to win in football and it's possible to lose."
