Billy Davies firmly believes Derby can prove their critics wrong following a sterling start on their return to the big time.
The Rams grabbed a deserved point from a 2-2 draw with Portsmouth at Pride Park as the curtain was raised on the new Barclays Premier League season.
Davies, watching the game from the director's box after being handed a one-match touchline ban by the Football Association following an infringement from a Championship game in January, was handed the perfect tonic as captain Mat Oakley fired Derby into a fourth-minute lead.
Although County continued to dominate, Portsmouth drew level in the 27th minute through Benjani Mwaruwari.
An end-to-end game then exploded in the closing stages, sparked by one of Portsmouth's five debutants, £7million striker John Utaka, who gave the visitors the lead.
But their advantage lasted a minute as one of Derby's by new faces in free transfer defender Andy Todd powered home a diving header.
"I am very proud of the performance, "said Davies. "I thought overall we deserved the point, although I am disappointed to have got only the one.
"It's commendable the way we competed with a side that has been in this division for a while now and given the amount of money they have spent, so I cannot complain.
"Ten months ago we were looking at avoiding relegation to League One, and now here we find ourselves competing against the best teams, players and managers and we have to enjoy the experience.
"I know there is no one outside Derby who gives us a chance, and I am not surprised. It's not a shock.
"I can understand it; Derby to go down and Davies the first to be sacked.
"It's the same every season for those teams that come up, but it doesn't change anything for me.
"I can understand why people think all that when you look at our spending power compared to many of the teams.
"We have got a lot of hard work ahead of us, and we need additions to the squad.
"Hopefully, if we do that, then by the end of the season we will have showed up one or two people."
Davies is close to completing a deal for United States midfielder Billy Feilhaber and Finland midfielder Mika Vayrynen, while a third bid has been made for Southampton striker Kenwyne Jones.
"We all know and recognise a lot more firepower is needed at Derby County, and we are working hard to make a deal happen and bring people in."
Despite having spent £23million in the transfer market this summer, Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp is of the same mind.
Redknapp believes his squad is not yet complete as he targets another top-half of the table.
"I still feel we need strengthening in one or two positions, "confirmed Redknapp.
"I do look at my team and feel that maybe we are not quite where I want us to be."
Redknapp was at least delighted with one of his new boys in Utaka, adding: "I thought he was excellent.
"He has good feet, was quick and strong and he can play through the middle or wide."
The game, though, was far too open for Redknapp's lighting and he knows if his side play the same way against Manchester United at Fratton Park in midweek then there will be no contest.
"I'd hate to play against them (United) like that because they will rip us to pieces, "added Redknapp.
"But this was the first game of the season and I was expecting Derby to play the way they did because any team that has just come up is going to have a right go.
"It's going to be a long old season, a tough one, and if we finish in the top half at the end of it, then it will be a great achievement. I will be absolutely delighted."
