Brazilian striker Diego Souza scored twice, while Thiago Silva and substitute Taison also found the net.

But who stood out in the anticipated clash?

Here are our player ratings:

Australia

Mitch Langerak  5.5 - Made the worst possible start after letting Souza’s shot squeeze past him with just 12 seconds on the clock. Came up with some decent saves to keep the score down in the second half.

Bailey Wright  4.5 – Calamitous error straight from the kick-off gifted Brazil the opener. Often wasteful in possession and was beaten in the air by Silva for the visitor’s second.

Trent Sainsbury  6 – The most convincing in Australia’s three-man defence. Played some decent passes around the back to break up Brazil’s possession. Replaced on 56 minutes before the floodgates opened.

Milos Degenek  5 – A tough night on the right side of a back three. Struggled on the ball, often conceding possession too cheaply.

Mathew Leckie  6.5 – Worked tirelessly up and down the right flank, where he came up against the pacey Douglas Costa. Fought to win the ball back whenever he lost it. Withdrawn after 56 minutes.

Aziz Behich  6 – A dangerous cross after eight minutes put Brazil under some rare pressure. Made a couple of important clearances but was overrun at times by the impressive pairing of Rafinha and Giuliano.

Mark Milligan  5.5 – It can’t have been easy for Australia’s midfield enforcer, who was still mourning the death of his grandfather. Milligan was given the run-around by Brazil’s talented forward line but never stopped battling.

Massimo Luongo  6 – Beavered away in Australia’s midfield, ruffling a few Brazilian feathers in the process. Generally, used the ball well when Australia had possession.

Robbie Kruse  6 – Worked hard on and off the ball, switching from a central midfield position to a wing-back role in the second half. Often Australia’s most creative player going forward.

James Troisi  5.5 – Some flashes of skill but was often wasteful in the final third. A few dangerous set pieces in the first half before he was replaced with 12 minutes to go.

Tim Cahill  5 – Australia’s skipper battled well but often found himself chasing the ball along Brazil’s backline. Made way for Jamie Maclaren on 56 minutes.

Subs

Jackson Irvine  5.5 – Added some composure to Australia’s midfield after replacing Sainsbury in the second half.

Jamie Maclaren   5 – A tough game to come into for the striker, as his side created little in the attacking third.

Ajdin Hrustic  5 – Struggled to get to grips with Brazil’s midfield and was outjumped by Souza for the visitor’s fourth.

Aaron Mooy – Came on with 11 minutes remaining, not enough time to give a fair rating.

Dylan McGowan – Came on with 11 minutes remaining, not enough time to give a fair rating.

Tom Rogic – Came on with nine minutes remaining, not enough time to give a fair rating.

Brazil

Diego Alves  5.5 – The Brazilian keeper was a spectator for most of the night. Had a couple of routine saves to make in the second half.

Rafinha  6.5 – Regularly got forward to support the lively Giuliano from full back. Didn’t have much to do from a defensive point of view.

Thiago Silva  7 – A rare error almost let Australia back into the game before half time. Apart from that, it was another assured performance from Brazil’s experienced defender. Put the game beyond doubt by heading home the second goal.

Rodrigo Caio  7.5 – Impressive display from the 23-year-old centre half. Made a vital interception to stop Behich’s cross after eight minutes and made some important interceptions throughout the night.

Alex Sandro  7 – Provided a constant outlet down Brazil’s left-hand side. Made several overlapping runs to create space for his side’s attacking players.

David Luiz  7.5 – Snapped into challenges in a defensive midfield role, rarely allowing Australia’s midfielders to settle. Header at the front post led to Brazil’s second goal.

Paulinho  8.5 – Always available to receive the ball in midfield. Often controlled the tempo of the game and was the catalyst in Brazil’s mesmerising third goal.

Philippe Coutinho  8.5 – A joy to watch. The stand-in Brazilian captain pulled the strings in midfield throughout the night, regularly dropping deep to receive the ball before spraying it off to one of his teammates. Australia couldn’t live with him.

Douglas Costa  7 – A couple of sprightly runs down the left but most of Brazil’s attacks came from the opposite side. Tucked in at times, allowing offensive full-back Alex Sandro to run past him. Withdrawn after 58 minutes.

Giuliano  8 – A constant threat down Brazil’s right, regularly cutting in from the flank and running at Australia’s three-man defence. Early pressure led to Brazil’s opener, when he set up Souza after just 12 seconds.

Diego Souza  8 – Two goals marked a successful night for the 31-year-old. He linked up well with Brazil’s other attacking players and his performance will give manager Tite plenty to think about.

Subs

Taison  7 – Replaced Costa in the 58th minute. Finished off a superb move for Brazil’s third goal.

Willian  6 – The Chelsea star was given 20 minutes to show off his skills to the MCG crowd. Added some fresh legs after replacing Coutinho.

Fernandinho  6 – Came on with 18 minutes to go and shored up Brazil’s midfield.

Jemerson – Came on with 11 minutes remaining, not enough time to give a fair rating.

Rodriguinho – Came on with 11 minutes remaining, not enough time to give a fair rating.

Renato Augusto – Came on with seven minutes remaining, not enough time to give a fair rating.
