For the second week in a row Logan United played host to a northern opponent, this one being NQ Razorbacks.
The Townsville based side is most northern of all the clubs in the Queensland State League.
The Razorbacks were on the road for a second week in a row and were looking for their first away points after going down in controversial circumstances against the Fire in Round 1.
The match started at a good pace with both sides having a look at the opposition.
The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges but failed to test Chikau Mansale in the Logan goal.
United’s loose marking and inaccurate passing mirrored last weeks first half and ultimately ended the same way.
The Razorbacks opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a well worked move finished off by James Artis.
The North Queensland supporters were still celebrating when some more charitable defending from the home side was accepted by the Razorbacks Anthony Galliozi who slotted home clinically in the 27th doubling the visitors advantage.
Sean Burke was causing trouble down the left of the park with the United defense having problems containing his mazy runs.
Then in the 33rd against the run of play the simplicity of route one football was on display when the long clearance from keeper Mansale was flicked on by Logan target man Asa Harrington to strike partner Robert Laslo whose control, strength and volley just inside the visitor’s area gave Aaron Gibson no chance in the Razorbacks goal.
It was end to end football for the next short period with both sides having good scoring opportunities.
The visitor’s former NSL player Chris Scuderi popped up in the 43rd to finish off a flowing Razorbacks attacking move to make it 3-1 to the visitors at the break.
Logan Coach Walter Oldenburg made a change at the break with the hard working Toru Seki being replaced by the fit again Branislav Belic.
Returning from a knee injury the young midfielder on debut slotted in on the left and what an inspired substitution it would turn out to be.
The second period was, as was the case last week, to be all Logan. The half started with the home team keeping possession and immediately looking dangerous on the attack.
The weather man had predicted the chance of a storm and wind, with the latter showing up just after the interval. United came to terms with the conditions quicker and settled in with some neat passing and possession play.
In the 55th minute after sustained pressure, Belic challenged for a ball on the edge of the Razorbacks box which dipped over the flailing Gibson and nestled in the net.
With 35 minutes to play the young Logan side grew in confidence and produced the best football they’ve played this season in trying conditions.
To the NQ Razorbacks credit they dug in and defended their narrow lead with the passion you’d expect from that region.
The introduction of another debutant Andrew Parks to the midfield and defender Peter Torzsok gave the home team an even bigger grip on the game.
The Logan attacks were now coming in waves and if not for some desperate defending and wayward finishing the score would have been very much different.
With the Razorbacks playing with everyone behind the ball and the home side unable to breach their defenses the game ended in a slender 3-2 victory to the NQ Razorbacks.
At the Post Match Dinner Logan United’s Walter Oldenburg announced Luke Howell as the Logan United FC Player of the Match, Razorbacks Coach Mick Tonner called it: “A game of two halves," and that he was very happy and relieved to get the three points.
Logan United’s next match is against competition favorites the Brisbane Strikers at Perry Park on Saturday 12th April. Kickoff at 7.00pm.
