EXCLUSIVE: Brisbane Roar full back Ivan Franjic retains hope of fulfilling his dream of playing in Europe despite penning a new deal with the champions keeping him at Suncorp Stadium until 2016.
The Melbourne-born 25-year-old, who was part of the 2010-11 A-League All Star team, was one of six key Roar players who re-signed with the club this week.
The former Oakleigh and Melbourne Knights right back penned a lengthy extension until the end of the 2015-16 season and he told au.fourfourtwo.com he wanted to repay the Roar for the faith they put in him.
“Brisbane were the club who gave me my first opportunity. They gave me my chance,” Franjic said. “I wanted to show some loyalty and sign back with them.”
However Franjic, who revealed he has previously had options from clubs in Asia and Croatia, retained a desire to head to Europe if the right offer came up.
“I'd still love to go abroad if the right deal comes along,” Franjic said. “It's always been a dream of mine.
“If it doesn't come along I'm happy at Brisbane because they've been good to me and it works both ways.”
Franjic said he felt the club were in a healthy position following two A-League championships and he added he had full faith in new coach Rado Vidosic to continue their success.
“The club is going in the right direction and the boys believe that,” he said. “They've got faith in Rado and the club, so we're going to keep trying to go forward.”
Franjic brushed off concerns about pre-season results, including last week's 6-2 hammering from Adelaide United, stating they have been experimenting and specifically trying to develop a unit where players can play in all positions.
“We're shaping up well,” he said. “We're trying a few new things in pre-season. Different systems so we've got a few different plans. The boys are working hard and it's going well.
“We're experimenting with positions and different players and to develop more versatility.”
Franjic also reiterated the ambition for the 2012-13 season is to win a third A-League championship as well as improve on 2012's efforts in the Asian Champions League having bowed out in the group stage in their maiden appearance this year.
“The team is aiming to win another title and do well in Asia, past the group stage and do better than last year,” he said. “On a personal level is to play as many games as I can and help the team as much as I can.”
