Wesley Sneijder was again on target with his fourth goal of the campaign while Argentinian duo Javier Saviola and Gonzalo Higuain netted Real's other goals.

It was not totally straightforward for the champions, though, and they looked on the ropes for a while in the second half when newly-promoted Almeria, despite losing Albert Crusat to a 62nd-minute red card, got the score back to 2-1 through Kalu Uche.

Valencia came from behind to beat an unlucky Real Valladolid side 2-1.

The visitors dominated much of the game but went home empty-handed after David Silva's deflected effort sealed a dramatic late win for Valencia.

Daniel Kome had given Valladolid a shock lead early on but saw his strike cancelled out by a Fernando Morientes effort halfway through the first half.

Athletic Bilbao drew 1-1 with Real Zaragoza. Markel Susaeta opened the scoring for Athletic only for Diego Milito to reply.
