Roar keeper Liam Reddy is backing new Queensland signing Danny Tiatto to be the side’s ace card for the upcoming A-League season, comparing the former Socceroo’s presence to that of Victory linchpin Kevin Muscat.
“Danny will bring a Muscat presence. Every team in the A-League would love a Muscat presence… some talk about a Fred or an Archie type player but someone like Muscat is very good for the young players and that’s what we’re going to get with Danny,” Reddy told www.au.fourfourtwo.com.
Speaking after his side’s first pre-season training session of the year in Brisbane, Reddy added that a tough pre-season is keyif the underperforming side from the sunshine state will bring some joy to their fans.
“It’s vital we get the pre-season right. We have a new conditioning coach in Craig Starcevich who will bring some refreshing ideas to our fitness work. It’s very important we get it right before the season kicks off.
“It’s only 21 games in the A-League, so it’s a sprint. You cannot afford to have a slow start.”
Roar’s first session earlier today (Mon, April 16), consisted of light speed and gym work in the morning followed by some endurance and skills work in the afternoon.
“It’s good to see all the lads again… I haven’t seen them for a while as I’ve been in Sydney and Adelaide… Spase’s (Dilevski) looking a bit overweight but he always is,” quipped Reddy.
The keeper also revealed that he didn’t watch any of the recent finals matches. “Once we were out I wasn’t interested.”
Queensland will slowly move into pre-season over the next three weeks before ramping up training in the three weeks after that.
This will be followed by a training camp on the Gold Coast then some trial matches, including one against South Africa’s SuperSport United on July 1 at Suncorp.
At this stage, Reddy is Roar’s only keeper but there are still around five spots to be filled on the 23-man roster.
